Mauritius Attractions in Mauritius Nature & Parks Black River Gorges National Park
Take a journey though the craggy and richly green mountain world of Mauritius – a stark contrast to a coastal beach holiday.
Mauritius‘s first National Park was established in the mid-1990s and opened to visitors. This park, created by combining the Macchabee, Bel Ombre and Combo nature reserves, was created to preserve Mauritius‘s last native woodland. The park also contains some ebony trees, which once supplied the hardest wood in the world for building warships. This is an ideal area for those interested in taking walks in Mauritius. Numerous scenic hiking trails start from here, ranging from day excursions to a few shorter tours, such as on the Black River Peak.
On the other hand, the drive through the Black River Gorges National Park is equally rewarding and spectacular. Take a break at panorama viewing areas, or do as the locals do and pick the guava fruit growing at the roadside. For motorists, the most beautiful viewing area is the Black River Gorges Viewpoint (signposted), which on a clear day offers a view stretching from the gorge right to the coast.
If you are lucky during your trip through the Black River Gorges National Park, you may even come across examples of Mauritius’s rarer fauna, including Java deer, wild boar, monkeys and birds.
