Geography of Mauritius Landscapes of Mauritius Coast of Mauritius
The coast of Mauritius, some 124 miles (200 km) in length, is made up of a 99 miles (160 km) stretch of beaches. Only in the South, where there is no coral reef to protect the coast, do the ocean waves boom right onto the rocky, coastal cliffs.
The coastline is not straight and elongated, but divided into smaller, often solitary bays, long stretches of beach bordered by Filao forests, sometimes dotted with lava rocks.
A common feature of nearly all of the beaches is the white, mostly fine coral sand, which contrasts beautifully with the colours of the sea and the blue sky.
