Geography of Mauritius Landscapes of Mauritius The Highlands
The upland, known as the Highlands, covers a large part of Mauritius and is located approximately in the middle of the island. The mountains of the Highlands are always visible from the coast and the plains. The island originated in this area. Here, millions of years ago, volcanoes rose up above the surface of the sea and, with the outflow of lava, formed the broad surface of the island.
Today, the Highlands are wild and rugged from erosion. The highest peaks and deepest ravines are to be found here.
Numerous rivers form here due to the copious amounts of rainfall. The entire area is either sparsely populated or totally unpopulated and is home to the Black River Gorges National Park with its native forests.
