Mauritius Attractions in Mauritius Places of worship & holy places in Mauritius Pére Laval Gravesite
Located north of Port Louis is the town of Saint Croix, which every Mauritian knows, as this is where the Blessed Père Laval is buried, the Catholic priest who was beatified in 1979. The mausoleum in which the sarcophagus is kept is visited daily by many people who come to pray here.
People of all religions come here to pray and ask Blessed Pére Laval for his help. Flowers and candles are placed on the sarcophagus and some are taken from the grave for prayers at home.
Since the annual pilgrimage to the grave of Père Laval on September 9 is one of the large religious festivals in Mauritius, a large modern church with a large yard and parking lot was built next to the gravesite.
The colonial style rectory behind the church is also especially worth seeing.
